The West German Army of the 1980s

The Federal Republic of Germany provided the largest of the European armies on NATO's Central Front fielding 12 divisions in 3 Corps. The Bundeswehr had been formed in 1955, adopting mainly US equipment and organisation. The army or Heer went through a series of reorganisations, with the fourth, Heerestruktur 4 coming into force in the early 1980s. At the same time there were moves towards adopting locally built equipment as German industry recovered form the ravages of WW2 and pushed the West German economy to be the third largest in the world.

The Heer was manned by a mixture of regulars, conscripts serving up to 2 years and reservists or Heimatschutzkommando. The frontline units possessed the most up to date equipment, while some Local Defence units relied on civilian transport.

Despite the mixture of tenures, the Heer was a professional force that took the defence of its country very seriously. The reservist units may be rated Raw but with Regular morale. The bulk of the forces would be Trained, Regular or Professional and the front line Expert Professionals.
